RSS Feeds

Many of the more interesting and popular websites on the internet create new content on a regular basis. A podcast might produce weekly episodes. A blog or online news source might update its entries or articles several times an hour. With more traditional media you can subscribe to a journal or magazine to have the newest editions sent to you automatically, to be read at your leisure. The same model is used for online content. Most news sources provide “feeds” to which you can subscribe with a feed reader or a news aggregator. RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, provides a format in which sources code and share updated information. You needn't go to each individual website to find out what's new; the updated information is aggregated in one place for your convenience.

There are many different kinds of readers available; some run on your computer and others are designed to run on the web. Readers are built into email programs, web browsers, or portal sites like Yahoo and Google.
