September 21, 2007 Social Bookmarking

This week at the Friday Laptop Lounge we looked at how del.icio.us and other social bookmarking services might be used in our classes and for personal research projects.

1. You can set up your own del.icio.us account at del.icio.us. You'll need to download and install browser buttons; just follow the instructions when you sign up.

2. With del.icio.us you can easily save bookmarks to your favorite web sites. More importantly, you can use tags to organize your bookmarks into multiple categories and then bundle your tags into more comprehensive sets of interests.

3. You can also share your bookmarks with others.

4. And it is easy to discover new sites by looking through the bookmarks of others who share your research interests. You can add those with shared interests to your network, just as they might add you to theirs.

5. To keep track of links that have recently been bookmarked on topics you care about, create a subscription.

6. It's possible to set up a class del.icio.us site (or individual sites) and let students maintain links relevant to the course material and discover new web sites along the way. You can also create link or tag rolls and insert them into you class home page, including your Blackboard site.

POD maintains a del.icio.us site with bookmarked links to sites with useful information on teaching and learning. To see our list of links on social bookmarking, go here.

A quick and useful overview of social bookmarking is presented in this CommonCraft video. You can also watch Jon Udell's very thoughtful screencast on the relation between the process of tagging in social bookmarking and language evolution.
